Elisabeth Leonskaja, the grande dame of the Russian piano school performs with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra on September 27, 2019 for the first time at Ammersee. The concert is a repetition of the historical “Liberation Concert” of Jewish Holocaust survivors after the end of the war in 1945 in the monastery of St. Ottilien. The program features Adagietto from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, Piano Concerto No. 9 “Jenamy” by W.A. Mozart and Tchaikovsky´s Serenade for Strings.
The series of “Liberation Concerts” was opened in 2018 together with the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Israeli Buchmann-Mehta School of Music Symphony Orchestra of Tel Aviv University.The concert series pays tribute to the Jewish history of the monastery from 1945 to 1948. A hospital was formed in the Archabbey of the Missionary Benedictines to look after the few Holocaust survivors. More than 400 Jewish “Ottilien babies” were born there.
